This course introduces the fundamentals of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), and covers the measure put in place to protect those in hospitals or care homes from being inappropriately deprived of their liberty.

By completing/passing this course, you will attain the certificate Mental Capacity Act

  • understand the Mental Capacity Act (2005)
  • be able to identify when the Act should be considered
  • identify when the Act is not applicable
  • know the 5 key principles of the Act
  • understand how to perform a functional or diagnostic or both, test of capacity
  • appreciate the role of the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate
  • understand the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS 2009)
  • be introduced to future care planning for patients who lack capacity
  • understand the principles of best interest decision making
