Immediate Life Support
- Be able to reflect on the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) guidelines for Basic and Advanced Life Support
- Be able to understand the principles of Basic and Advanced Life Support and relate them to your work environment
- Know how to summon immediate emergency help in accordance with local protocols
- Be able to understand risks to the rescuer
- Know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration, escalating care in accordance with local policy
- Be able to recognise, and in the early stages manage, cardiorespiratory arrest
- Know how they should apply the local Do Not Attempt Cardiorespiratory Arrest or ReSPECT Policy within a clinical context
- Be able to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions in accordance with current RCUK guidelines
- Be able to provide basic and intermediate airway management
- Know how to use basic and intermediate airway adjuncts
- Be able to initiate and maintain effective lung ventilations in accordance with current RCUK guidelines
- Understand the methods for providing access to the patient’s circulatory system
- Understand the drugs used during cardiorespiratory arrest
- Be able to apply a monitor and assess the patient’s heart rate
- Be able to operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and appropriately
- Understand the reversible causes for cardiorespiratory arrest
- Understand their individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations
- Understand their individual responsibilities in reporting and recording details of an emergency event accurately
- Understand current legislation and local resuscitation policies and procedures
- Understand their professional roles and responsibilities
