Epilepsy

This module is intended to give an overview of epilepsy, its diagnosis and management but not direct patient advice. There is enormous variation in epilepsy and so questions regarding a patient should be directed to the patient’s specialist. Patient safety is paramount in all circumstances so in any emergency, call 999 or refer the person to hospital urgently. Epilepsy must be diagnosed and initially managed by neurology/epilepsy specialists only.
By completing/passing this course, you will attain the certificate Epilepsy.
Course Content
- Understand the epidemiology of seizure disorders such as epilepsy
- Understand the pathophysiology and diagnosis of epilepsy (and other seizure disorders)
- Understand what can precipitate a seizure
- Understand the need for specialist referral to obtain an accurate diagnosis
- Know the emergency management of seizures & the medications used to treat epilepsy
- Understand seizures may also be caused by functional disorders, alcohol withdrawal and other medical/neurosurgical diagnoses
